When the Buccaneers made headlines by signing quarterback Baker Mayfield to a lucrative three-year deal exceeding $100 million this offseason, fans and analysts alike were eager to see how he would perform in the upcoming season.

As Tampa Bay progressed through various offseason programs and now finds itself several days into training camp, the focus has shifted to Mayfield’s performance in the new offensive system.

Following Sunday’s training camp session, head coach Todd Bowles was questioned about Mayfield’s progress compared to the previous year.

Bowles commented, “It’s still early to make a definitive assessment, but Mayfield’s accuracy in the recent practices has been impressive. His grasp of the playbook and ability to execute plays effectively are key areas of focus for him moving forward.”

The addition of offensive coordinator Liam Coen, who joined the Buccaneers after the departure of Dave Canales to the Carolina Panthers, has provided Mayfield with a familiar face. Having worked with Coen during his brief stint with the Rams in 2022, Mayfield’s transition to the new offensive scheme has been smoother.

With the existing rapport between Mayfield and Coen, it is encouraging to see the quarterback adapting quickly to the new system.

The intensity at training camp is expected to rise as the team gears up for padded practices starting on Monday. It will be interesting to observe how Mayfield and the offense perform under these conditions.
