Knicks free agent targets to fill out end-of-the-bench depth

The New York Knicks Are Building a Solid Roster

The New York Knicks roster is nearly complete, with the recent re-signing of Precious Achiuwa to a one-year, $6 million deal. This move adds more experience to their backup center position, making Achiuwa a valuable asset to the team.

With 13 players already on guaranteed contracts, the Knicks have one roster spot open and the taxpayer mid-level exception worth $5.2 million. They also have the option to sign players to veteran minimum deals.

While the free-agent market is thin, it would be wise for the Knicks to use their exception to add depth to their roster. Any player signed with the exception would likely be on a one-year deal to maintain flexibility for future moves.

It’s important to note that the Knicks are not required to spend the full $5.2 million, and they could allocate a portion of it to sign a player. Additionally, any player signed using the exception may be subject to trade rumors due to salary-cap considerations.

Potential Targets for the Knicks

1. Robert Covington, Forward

While Covington’s best days may be behind him, he could still provide solid defense and toughness as a backup forward for the Knicks. His versatility to play multiple positions could be valuable in case of injuries to key players.

2. Udoka Azubuike, Center

Azubuike, a young and promising center, could be a developmental project for the Knicks. With his size and strength, he has the potential to make an impact in the paint if given the opportunity to showcase his skills.

3. Reggie Bullock, Guard/Forward

Bullock, a reliable shooter and team defender, could be a valuable asset off the bench for the Knicks. His familiarity with coach Tom Thibodeau’s system could make for a seamless transition back to New York.

4. Doug McDermott, Guard

McDermott’s sharpshooting abilities and willingness to drive to the basket make him a desirable option for the Knicks. His experience and positive attitude could benefit the team both on and off the court.

5. Thaddeus Young, Forward/Center

Young, a seasoned veteran with a knack for making smart decisions, could provide valuable mentorship to the Knicks’ young big men. While not a regular rotation player, his presence could be beneficial in emergency situations.
