Considered by many to be the most influential player in the history of the New York Jets, quarterback Joe Namath played a key role in leading the team to victory in Super Bowl III.
One of Namath’s most iconic moments came when he boldly predicted the Jets would win the Super Bowl despite being significant underdogs. Namath famously declared:
“We’re gonna win the game. I guarantee it”.
Namath’s prediction came true as the Jets triumphed over the Baltimore Colts to secure their first Super Bowl title. Unfortunately, the Jets have yet to claim another championship since then.
However, there is hope for a turnaround this year. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers has set winning the Super Bowl as the team’s goal and, much like Namath, he is not shy about expressing that goal publicly.
In an article by Steve Serby of the NY Post, Rodgers elaborated on his belief that the Jets are among the select few teams capable of achieving that lofty goal.
“The beauty is, every single year there’s 8 to 12 teams, maybe — probably less — but 8 to 12 teams that can actually do it, and we’re one of those 8 to 12.”
Rodgers also praised the quality of the Jets’ roster, noting improvements on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.
Rodgers said, “I think so, yeah. I think we’re locked in. I think we’re better upfront [LT Tyron Smith, RT Morgan Moses] on the offensive side … and across the board on offense I think we have that year of experience. Defensively we’re always gonna be good.”
While Rodgers’ goal-setting may not be as bold as Namath’s guarantee, it is refreshing to see a team with such confidence in its abilities. Jets fans can only hope that this optimism translates into success on the field this season.
