As the Buccaneers prepared for training camp, there was uncertainty surrounding left tackle Tristan Wirfs. Negotiations for a new deal had been ongoing, leading many to speculate if Wirfs would hold out without a new contract.
Thankfully, Wirfs has reported to camp without any holdout threats.
Wirfs emphasized the importance of being present at practice, regardless of his contract situation, during a media session following Monday’s practice.
He shared, “I have to be out here. It’s just not in my DNA to… it was hard enough missing OTAs. I was in the weight room window watching the guys practice. I just told Coach Bowles I wanted to be cautious.”
Reports on when a new deal for Wirfs will be finalized have been conflicting. Both Tampa Bay and Wirfs’ camp have been engaged in discussions for some time.
Despite the uncertainty, Wirfs remains optimistic about reaching a deal soon, stating, “We’re just trying to work out some little things. But I think we’re moving well. These past couple days have been really good.”
The Buccaneers aim to make Wirfs the highest-paid tackle in the NFL, with general manager Jason Licht leading the negotiations.
