Olympics Update: The women’s soccer gold-medal match at the 2024 Paris Olympics is confirmed: The United States will go head to head against Brazil this Saturday. The USWNT secured a 1-0 victory over Germany, thanks to standout performances by Sophia Smith and Alyssa Naeher. On the other hand, Brazil defeated Spain with a commanding 4-2 win to secure their spot in the final.
This will mark the third time that the United States and Brazil will face off in the Olympic gold medal match. The previous encounters in 2004 and 2008 both resulted in victories for the U.S.
The USWNT will be aiming to clinch their first gold medal since 2012.
In a twist of fate, Brazil and Spain, like the U.S. and Germany, clashed in the group stage just a week ago. Spain emerged victorious with a 2-0 win, placing Brazil’s advancement in jeopardy. However, Brazil managed to turn the tables during the knockout stage.
Brazil took an early lead when a clearance from Spanish keeper Cata Coll deflected off captain Irene Pardes in the sixth minute. Before halftime, Gabi Portilho extended Brazil’s lead with a goal assisted by Yasmin.
During the second half, Brazil continued to apply pressure on Spain, capitalizing on their opponent’s errors. Brazilian captain Adriana scored in the chaos of the box, making it 3-0. Although Spain’s Salma Paralluelo scored a late goal in the 85th minute, Brazil maintained control of the match.
Looking ahead, the gold medal match is expected to be a challenging one for the USWNT. Germany displayed a physical style of play in the semifinal, and Brazil is anticipated to adopt a similar approach. The U.S. has also played two consecutive games in extra time, whereas Brazil has not required extra time in the knockout stage. Hopefully, the advantage will be balanced out by a few additional days of rest for both teams.
In their recent encounter at the CONCACAF W Gold Cup Final, the United States emerged victorious with a 1-0 win, courtesy of a goal by Lindsey Horan.
Notably, Brazilian veteran Marta, a revered figure in women’s soccer, will be making her final major international appearance on Saturday. Marta, who is set to retire from international competition this year, served a two-game suspension following a red card in the group stage match against Spain.
Spain will face Germany in the bronze medal match on Friday.
