The Los Angeles Dodgers have been missing a crucial piece of their starting rotation for most of the 2024 season.
Right-handed pitcher Walker Buehler returned from his second Tommy John surgery only to be sidelined again with right hip inflammation. The 30-year-old has struggled this season, posting a 1-4 record with a 5.84 ERA.
According to Jim Bowden of The Athletic, Buehler’s value has likely decreased due to his performance.
“He had a 5.84 ERA in eight starts before landing on the IL and will need a strong finish to attract interest in free agency,” Bowden stated.
Once a Cy Young contender, Buehler has faced challenges in regaining his form since his injury in 2022. His days as the Dodgers’ ace seem to be behind him, and a significant resurgence will be needed to rebuild his value.
Despite this, there may still be teams willing to take a chance on Buehler with a short-term contract to give him the opportunity to prove himself and increase his market value.
Approaching his 31st birthday in July 2025, Buehler’s recent injury history may limit his chances of securing a long-term deal. However, given his current low value, teams could be inclined to offer him a shorter contract.
It will be intriguing to see how Buehler performs in the latter half of the season and what his prospects will be in the upcoming offseason.
