Cardinals call up scorching top prospect, place veteran on injured list

The St. Louis Cardinals are gearing up for their series against the Cincinnati Reds with a record of 60-58, placing them in second in the National League Central and 1 1/2 games behind in the Wild Card race.

Prior to the series opener, the team made some roster moves, with former top prospect Jordan Walker making his return to the Major League club.

“Jordan Walker has been called up from Memphis,” the Cardinals announced on Twitter. “Matt Carpenter has been placed on the 10-day IL retroactive to August 9 due to a lower back strain.”

In his recent 17 games at Triple-A Memphis, Walker has been on fire, boasting a .324/.380/.648 slash line with a 1.028 OPS.

Walker’s promotion comes at a crucial time for the Cardinals, as they are set to face left-hander Andrew Abbott, against whom they have struggled. Adding an extra right-handed bat to the lineup should help boost their offensive output.

After a strong rookie season in 2023, Walker had a rough start to the 2024 season, leading to his demotion to Triple-A in April. However, his recent performance in Memphis suggests that he is back on track and ready to contribute to the Cardinals’ offense.

Offensive struggles have plagued St. Louis throughout the season, with their recent loss to the Kansas City Royals underscoring the need for improved production at the plate.
