Paul Skenes pitches 6 scoreless innings as Pirates monitor his workload closely

Paul Skenes continues to make a strong case for the National League Rookie of the Year title, despite some recent struggles. The Pittsburgh Pirates’ right-hander delivered an outstanding performance in a recent game against the Cincinnati Reds, pitching six scoreless innings, striking out nine batters, and allowing only two hits. With an impressive ERA of 2.16, Skenes is leading the MLB in this category, although he has not yet pitched enough innings to qualify for consideration.

Since the All-Star break, Skenes has faced some challenges, posting a 3.13 ERA in five starts with 32 strikeouts in 31 1/3 innings. While these numbers are slightly less flashy compared to his earlier stellar performance, Skenes remains a formidable contender for the Rookie of the Year title.

Despite Skenes’ impressive stats, San Diego Padres outfielder Jackson Merrill has emerged as a strong competitor for the award with his .291 batting average, 18 home runs, 71 RBIs, and 13 stolen bases.

As Skenes surpasses his innings total from last season, there are concerns about his workload and the possibility of being shut down for the season. However, Pittsburgh Pirates’ manager Derek Shelton has indicated that they will closely monitor Skenes’ innings and pitches per game, potentially adjusting his rest schedule to ensure his health and performance.

Shelton emphasized the importance of Skenes pitching through a full Major League season to gain valuable experience and develop as a player. Despite the challenges, Skenes’ determination and talent continue to impress both fans and critics alike.

If the Pirates decide to give Skenes additional rest, his next start could be against the Chicago Cubs or the Cleveland Guardians, depending on the team’s schedule and Shelton’s strategy.
