Reports suggest that Jay Shah, the current BCCI secretary, is set to take over as the new chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) following the decision of Greg Barclay to step down in November 2024. Shah’s potential appointment has generated significant interest in the cricketing world.

With strong backing from Cricket Australia, the England and Wales Cricket Board, and other members of the cricketing community, Shah’s rise to the top position at ICC appears imminent. While an official announcement is pending, Shah is recognized as one of the most influential figures within the ICC boardroom.

Currently leading the ICC’s Finance and Commercial Affairs sub-committee, Shah is on track to become the youngest ICC chairman.

The Sporting News explores the history of Indian ICC chairmen, with names like Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N Srinivasan, and Shashank Manohar holding the prestigious position in the past.

List of Indian ICC chairmen

Four Indians have previously served as ICC chairman, starting with Jagmohan Dalmiya in 1997.

Name Term
Jagmohan Dalmiya 1997–2000
Sharad Pawar 2010–2012
N Srinivasan 26 July 2014 – 9 November 2015
Shashank Manohar 22 November 2015 – 30 June 2020

The eligibility and election process for the ICC chairman position allow for three terms of two years each, with a simple majority of nine votes needed to secure the role. The deadline for nominations is August 27, 2024, and Shah is expected to be a leading contender.

If appointed, Jay Shah, at just 35 years old, would become the youngest ICC chairman in history.
