Steve Nash ‘didn’t want to be a career coach’ as Nets stint was ‘unique situation’ for two-time NBA MVP

Steve Nash’s coaching journey took an unexpected turn when he joined the Brooklyn Nets in 2020. During Goran Dragic’s farewell game in Ljubljana, Slovenia, Nash reflected on his coaching career, stating that coaching was not something he had planned to pursue long-term. “Coaching was a great experience,” Nash said, “but I didn’t want it to be my career. I’m focused on my family and other projects.”

After retiring as a player in 2015, Nash joined the Golden State Warriors as a part-time player development consultant. His transition to head coach of the Nets came as a surprise, especially considering the star-studded lineup of Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, and later on, James Harden.

Nash emphasized the importance of individual connections and building a culture where players can thrive. Despite challenges with injuries and player availability, the Nets had a successful season under Nash’s leadership.

However, the following season posed new challenges with Irving’s absence and Harden’s trade request. The team’s performance suffered, leading to Nash and the Nets parting ways early into the 2022-23 season.

Reflecting on his time with the Nets, Nash acknowledged the unique dynamics of coaching and the need for constant adaptation. While he briefly considered a coaching opportunity with the Toronto Raptors, the team ultimately chose a different candidate.
