A unique golf event is set to take place later this year, as a team of PGA Tour players will face off against LIV Golf players in a match play format, as reported by Eamon Lynch of Golfweek.
The event, known as “The Match,” will feature top players such as Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, Bryson DeChambeau, and Brooks Koepka. Scheduled to air on TNT in December, the competition aims to not only showcase golf talent but also engage fans in an exciting showdown.
“This isn’t just a contest between some of golf’s major champions; it’s an event designed to energize the fans,” McIlroy said in a text to Lynch. “We’re all here to put on a great show and contribute to a goodwill event that brings the best together again.”
Previous editions of “The Match” have seen the likes of Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson competing alongside other sports stars, adding to the excitement of the event. This year’s edition will have the added storyline of the PGA Tour facing off against LIV Golf, highlighting the ongoing developments in the world of professional golf.
Despite the competitive nature of the event, discussions between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf are ongoing. A framework agreement was announced in June 2023, with negotiations continuing towards a resolution. However, challenges remain in determining the future of team golf and the potential return of LIV Golf members to the Tour without repercussions.
“I think if it doesn’t happen soon, then honestly, I think PIF and the Saudis are going to have to look at alternative options, right?” McIlroy said. “I’d say that’s the next step in all of this if something doesn’t get done.”
