Baseball legend Wade Boggs revealed on Saturday that he is facing prostate cancer.
In a social media update, the 66-year-old Boggs shared his determination to overcome the disease, stating that he is “going to ring that damn bell” alongside a photo of a prostate cancer patient guide.
Known for his illustrious career spanning 18 seasons with the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, and Tampa Bay Rays, Boggs achieved numerous accolades including being a 12-time All-Star, two-time Gold Glove Award winner, and five-time AL batting champion. He also clinched a World Series victory with the Yankees in 1996. Both the Red Sox and Rays retired his number, and he was rightfully inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2005.
The Baseball Hall of Fame tweeted a message of support, saying, “Sending our well wishes to @ChickenMan3010 as he battles prostate cancer. We’re with you every step of the way, Wade!”
Statistics from the American Cancer Society reveal that approximately 299,010 new cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed each year, with about 1 in 8 men being diagnosed with the disease in their lifetime.
