The New York Yankees made a significant announcement on Monday, revealing that their top prospect Jasson Domínguez has been promoted from the team’s Triple-A Scranton affiliate. Domínguez, who is 21 years old, made his official debut with the Yankees on Monday afternoon, starting in center field during their 10-4 victory over the Kansas City Royals at Yankee Stadium. He managed to contribute with a hit and a run scored on a throwing error in the fourth inning.
During his time in Triple-A this season, Domínguez showcased his talent by batting .314 with an .880 OPS, hitting 11 home runs, driving in 35 runs, and stealing 16 bases in 250 plate appearances. Unfortunately, his playing time was limited to 58 games due to an oblique injury that kept him sidelined for six weeks in mid-June. Despite this setback, MLB.com had previously ranked Domínguez as the Yankees’ top prospect.
Fans and media were surprised by Domínguez’s absence from the initial September call-ups, especially considering his impressive MLB debut last year when he hit a home run off Justin Verlander. However, his promising start in the big leagues was cut short by a torn UCL that required Tommy John surgery and kept him out of action until May.
Manager Aaron Boone explained that Domínguez wasn’t called up earlier because the organization wanted him to play regularly, which wouldn’t have been possible with the Yankees at that time. Nevertheless, the team recognized the need for Domínguez’s talents in the outfield, given the struggles of players like Alex Verdugo and Trent Grisham.
To make room for Domínguez on the roster, the Yankees placed infielder DJ LeMahieu on the injured list due to right hip inflammation. Despite this change, the team continued their winning ways on Monday night, securing a dominant six-run victory over their opponents.
