White Sox GM again downplays free agent plans as team finishes worst season in MLB history

The Chicago White Sox are in the midst of what may go down as the worst season in MLB history, with little hope for improvement in 2025. General manager Chris Getz recently stated that the team won’t be pursuing top free agents but will instead focus on acquiring bargains that could be traded for prospects later on. This strategy mirrors their approach last year when they signed Erick Fedde and made minimal signings.

Following a disastrous season where they lost over 120 games, the White Sox are once again opting for a conservative approach. Despite being at the bottom of their rebuilding cycle, they only have the 11th ranked farm system and are limited in their draft pick due to MLB’s lottery rules. The team’s lack of significant progress since their 2021 AL Central win raises questions about their rebuilding strategy and owner Jerry Reinsdorf’s commitment to investing in the team’s success.

As fans question the team’s direction and loyalty to its supporters, the White Sox face a challenging road ahead. With memories of the 2024 season still fresh, the team must demonstrate a genuine commitment to improvement to regain the trust of their fan base. It remains to be seen whether the White Sox can turn their fortunes around and build a competitive team in the future.
