The Los Angeles Clippers’ standout player, Kawhi Leonard, recently underwent a knee procedure during the offseason and is expected to have limited participation in the team’s training camp, as reported by The Athletic’s Shams Charania.

While specific details about the procedure and Leonard’s recovery timeline remain undisclosed, the team has stated that he will focus on “strengthening his knee” at the beginning of camp this fall. Despite this limitation, the Clippers are optimistic about his progress. It is uncertain whether he will miss any games or be ready for the season opener against the Phoenix Suns on Oct. 23.

Leonard was sidelined for the last three games of the playoffs last season due to a knee injury. Initially slated to represent Team USA in the Paris Olympics, Leonard participated in training camp before being removed from the roster. This decision, as per Team USA’s statement, was made in his “best interest,” despite his readiness to compete. Derrick White replaced Leonard on the team.

The Clippers denied any involvement in the decision, with Clippers president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank expressing disappointment. Throughout his career, Leonard has faced numerous significant knee injuries, including missing the entire 2021-22 season due to a torn ACL and playing only two playoff games in 2023 due to a torn meniscus. He also parted ways with the Spurs in 2018 amid injury-related disputes.

Last season, Leonard appeared in 68 games, marking one of his highest game counts in recent years. He averaged 23.7 points and 6.1 rebounds while securing his sixth All-Star selection.

Despite Leonard’s assurance of his health this summer, the Clippers must now prepare for the season with the possibility of their star player not being immediately available. Following the departure of Paul George in free agency, the Clippers have faced early playoff exits in the last two seasons.
