NBA strikes agreement with gambling partners to remove under prop bets on lowest-paid players, per report

The National Basketball Association (NBA) has recently come to an agreement with its gambling partners to eliminate proposition bets on players who are not making significant salaries. This decision was made in response to a situation involving Jontay Porter, who was banned for life after being found guilty of manipulating games for betting purposes.

Specifically, popular sports books like FanDuel, DraftKings, and BetMGM will no longer offer “under” bets on players with two-way contracts or 10-day contracts. Porter, who was on a two-way contract with the Toronto Raptors, was making approximately $56,000 while playing for both the Raptors and their G League affiliate.

According to The Athletic, Porter disclosed confidential information to a sports bettor, leading to a substantial bet being placed on him underperforming in a game. To ensure the bet’s success, Porter intentionally removed himself from the game after just three minutes, claiming he was ill. He also placed multiple bets on NBA games, netting nearly $22,000 in winnings.

The NBA and its betting partners decided to remove these prop bets for lower-paid players to prevent similar incidents in the future. Players with lower salaries may be more incentivized to manipulate their performance for financial gain, unlike higher-paid players who have less reason to jeopardize their careers for a bet.

This proactive approach by the league is crucial as gambling becomes more prevalent in the NBA, ensuring the integrity of the games and protecting the players from potential exploitation.
