England’s interim manager Lee Carsley has acknowledged that selecting the squad is one of the most challenging aspects of his role.
Carsley is preparing to lead the Three Lions in two more matches before handing over the reins to Thomas Tuchel in 2025.
England is scheduled to play against Greece on November 14, followed by a match against the Republic of Ireland three days later.
The Under-21s coach has revealed his final squad, including promising young talents like Lewis Hall, Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Angel Gomes, and Curtis Jones.
Carsley confessed that choosing just 26 players is a tough task, but he finds joy in making those phone calls.

He explained, “I find the biggest challenge of this role is selecting the squad. There are players who are having impressive seasons but couldn’t make it into this squad.”
“Many of the squad members are dealing with injuries. Hopefully, we can field the strongest team possible,” Carsley added.
“I feel a great sense of responsibility. Being in this squad is earned. Making those calls is a privilege I don’t take lightly.”
“The challenge for the players now is to maintain their position and compete at the highest level,” he emphasized.
Carsley mentioned his experience standing in the dugout for Greece’s historic victory against England and admitted to moments of self-doubt.

Reflecting on his coaching stint, Carsley said, “This experience has been a valuable learning curve for me and the staff. Stepping out of our comfort zones has made us stronger.”
“While the loss to Greece was disappointing, we are moving in the right direction. We will be judged by our results, and I hope we can end on a positive note,” he concluded.
