UEFA’s investigation into referee David Coote’s conduct has been triggered by a video published in The Sun allegedly showing him using a white powder. The video was reportedly taken during Euro 2024 at a UEFA-appointed hotel the day before he assisted the VAR in the Portugal versus France quarterfinal match.
A statement from UEFA read: “A UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector has been tasked with assessing a possible breach of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations by referee Mr. David Coote. More information on this matter will be disclosed in due course.”
These allegations surfaced shortly after Coote was removed from his duties by the PGMOL following another video that appeared to show him making negative comments about Liverpool and their former manager Jurgen Klopp.
UEFA has since sidelined Coote from the upcoming Nations League fixtures in response to the second video. The PGMOL has vowed to support Coote during the investigation, emphasizing his well-being as a top priority.
The PGMOL’s statement read: “We are taking these allegations seriously and have suspended David Coote pending a thorough investigation. His welfare is our primary concern, and we are committed to providing him with the necessary support during this challenging period. We are unable to provide further comments at this time.”
