Despite missing his first opportunity for a game-winning shot in regulation against the Toronto Raptors on Saturday, Jayson Tatum came through in overtime with a clutch 3-pointer at the buzzer, securing a 126–123 victory for the Boston Celtics at TD Garden. This win improved Boston’s record to 11–3, only trailing the 14–0 Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference standings.
In the closing moments of regulation, Tatum lost control of the ball while driving towards the free-throw line, missing a potential game-winner. However, he redeemed himself in overtime, hitting the decisive shot despite tough defense from Ochai Agbaji.
Tatum finished the game with 24 points, 11 rebounds, and nine assists, narrowly missing out on a triple-double. Jaylen Brown contributed 27 points, six rebounds, and seven assists for the Celtics.
Coach Joe Mazzulla commended Tatum for his mental toughness and work ethic, emphasizing that missed opportunities are a part of the game. The Raptors, despite missing key players like Scottie Barnes and Immanuel Quickley, put up a valiant effort, with Jakob Pöeltl scoring 35 points and RJ Barrett recording a triple-double.
With Jrue Holiday sidelined due to a knee injury, the Celtics will have some time off before facing the undefeated Cavaliers in their next NBA Cup matchup on Tuesday.
