Nikolas Motta Aims to Shine at UFC Macau

Nikolas Motta is gearing up to make a statement as he kicks off the UFC Macau event by facing Maheshate this weekend in China.

The former CFFC lightweight champion shared in an interview with MMA Fighting that his ultimate goal is to establish a winning streak within the UFC, a feat he has yet to accomplish with a 2-2 (1 NC) record since joining the organization.

However, Motta faces challenges in finding the right balance between game plans and maintaining excitement levels.

Reflecting on his preparation, Motta admitted, “At first, I was considering utilizing takedowns and jiu-jitsu, but as the camp progressed, I shifted my focus to striking. I want to gauge the fight and adapt accordingly. I have a solid foundation from Nova Uniao and Jake Shields, supplemented with my own enhancements. I feel confident in my ground game.”

Motta relocated from Las Vegas to Thailand to train at Bangtao MMA gym alongside the Hickman brothers upon signing his fight contract in China. He mentioned that his prior training at the gym got him into top shape swiftly.

“I honed my grappling skills in Las Vegas before heading to Thailand. My wrestling and jiu-jitsu are exceptional,” Motta stated. “However, my preference is to showcase my striking abilities and deliver an impressive performance. That’s what counts in the UFC.”

Competing in hostile territory is not new for Motta, who has experienced this scenario in the majority of his UFC fights and pre-UFC matches since moving to the US in 2017. With a 6-2 record when facing opponents in their hometowns or countries, Motta thrives in such situations.

Regarding his upcoming bout with China’s Maheshate, a lightweight with a 50% finish rate, Motta expressed optimism, saying, “I believe this is a favorable match-up that promises an exciting showdown. From what I gather, he employs a Sanda style in striking, which suits me well.”

Looking ahead to UFC Macau, Motta’s primary focus is on securing a victory this Saturday, aiming for his second consecutive win following a quick knockout of Tom Nolan in January. He emphasized the importance of staying active in the UFC moving forward.

Motta concluded, “I’m taking it one step at a time, savoring the moment, and remaining grateful. During tough times in this camp, I reminded myself of the opportunity I prayed for. Whenever faced with challenges, I persisted in believing. Now, everything is falling into place, and I’m fully prepared.”
