When the Philadelphia 76ers put together a lineup featuring Joel Embiid, Paul George, and Tyrese Maxey, they probably didn’t anticipate rookie Jared McCain emerging as the team’s leading scorer after 15 games.
However, that’s exactly what happened. While it may signal a challenging season for the Sixers so far, it doesn’t take away from McCain’s impressive performance.
The 16th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft played a pivotal role in Philadelphia’s much-needed 113-98 victory over the Brooklyn Nets on Friday. McCain delivered 30 points on 11-of-20 shooting, along with five rebounds, three assists, and two steals. This outstanding performance only bolsters his case for Rookie of the Year.
McCain’s recent streak as the team’s top scorer has set several records, including his seventh consecutive game with over 20 points. This achievement surpasses all other NBA rookies, who have only managed a total of 10 such games.
While this may not have been the original plan for the Sixers, who currently hold a 3-12 record, McCain’s success can be attributed to filling in for injured All-Star teammates. Once Embiid, George, and Maxey return to full health, McCain may transition into a supporting role while still contributing from the perimeter. Nevertheless, his current performance showcases his ability to seize opportunities and make a significant impact, potentially positioning him as a frontrunner for Rookie of the Year.
