The Kansas City Royals and Cincinnati Reds both made significant trades on Friday, shaking up their rosters for the upcoming season.
In an exchange between the two upstart teams from the central division, the Reds traded infielder Jonathan India and outfielder Joey Wiemer to the Royals in return for starting pitcher Brady Singer, the club announced. This move reunites India and Singer, who were college teammates at Florida.
India, the NL Rookie of the Year in 2021, has been a consistent performer for the Reds. However, with a surplus of infielders on the team, the Reds decided to part ways with him. India, primarily a second baseman, has also played at third base in the minors and college. The Reds have promising young players ready to take over those positions.
On the other hand, Singer brings a strong pitching presence to the Reds, having achieved a 3.71 ERA in 179 2/3 innings in the previous season. His addition bolsters the Reds’ rotation significantly.
It remains to be seen how India will fit into the Royals’ lineup. While he is known for his hitting ability, his defensive skills may require a position change. Wiemer, another player in the trade, has shown potential and could benefit from a fresh start with his new team.
