Tommy Edman had a successful debut season with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The team has secured his presence for the foreseeable future.

The versatile player has agreed to a lucrative five-year, $74 million contract extension with a club option for a sixth year, as confirmed by the Dodgers on Friday. According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the deal includes a hefty $17 million signing bonus and deferred payments.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have agreed on a contract extension with IF/OF Tommy Edman for five years for $74M through the 2029 season with a club option for the 2030 season.

Previously set to enter free agency after 2025, Edman now joins a group of key Dodgers players locked in until 2029, including Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Blake Snell, and Will Smith.

The structure of Edman’s extension mirrors that of Snell’s recent deal, with a substantial signing bonus and deferred payments. This financial arrangement benefits the Dodgers in managing their luxury tax obligations while providing financial security to the player.

Edman’s acquisition at the trade deadline proved instrumental in the Dodgers’ postseason success, with his standout performances earning him the NLCS MVP award and solidifying the team’s defense.

Edman’s versatility in playing premium defensive positions like shortstop, center field, and second base adds immense value to the Dodgers’ roster. His ability to excel on both sides of the field, coupled with his clutch performances, makes him a valuable asset for the team.

The Dodgers’ quest for positional stability is further addressed by Edman’s presence, especially following the departure of key players. His role is expected to be pivotal in filling positional gaps and contributing offensively in the upcoming seasons.

Securing Edman’s services for the next five years signifies the Dodgers’ commitment to building a formidable team for sustained success. With ongoing roster enhancements in progress, the team aims to address key areas such as starting pitching, outfield depth, and bullpen reinforcements to maintain their competitive edge.
