Yankees GM Brian Cashman defends decision to not offer Juan Soto a free Yankee Stadium suite

The New York Yankees chose not to re-sign Juan Soto, leading to discussions about the newest member of the New York Mets during the MLB winter meetings.

One interesting aspect that emerged from the Yankees’ failed attempt to re-sign Soto was the debate over stadium suites and whether players should pay for them. According to the New York Post’s Jon Heyman, the Mets’ offer stood out due to the inclusion of a free suite at Citi Field.

The Yankees, on the other hand, declined to offer a similar suite at their stadium, citing the precedent of past stars paying for their suites:

“The Yankees shouldn’t be faulted for bidding a whopping $760M, but they wouldn’t budge on the suite. The Yankees felt they couldn’t give a suite to Soto when [Aaron] Judge pays for his suite, and even Derek Jeter paid. They were willing to discount a suite but not alter their precedent.

“[Mets owner Steve] Cohen didn’t give the suite much of a thought. When he has his eyes on a prize, he is singularly focused.”

When given the chance to respond, Cashman reiterated the Yankees’ stance, as reported by NJ.com:

“Some high-end players that make a lot of money for us, if they want suites, they buy them,” Cashman said.

He explained the process of providing stadium seats for players’ families and the availability of suites for purchase, emphasizing the amenities and options available.

Cashman highlighted the family-friendly environment at the stadium and the previous negotiations where players had the option to purchase suites, indicating that the team would honor those agreements.

While it may seem easy to criticize the Yankees for potentially losing Soto to the Mets over the suite issue, it’s important to remember that Soto had the option to negotiate for a higher salary with the Yankees to cover the cost of a suite. Ultimately, the Mets’ offer exceeded $765 million in value, including various perks like the free suite, while the Yankees stood firm on their position.

The debate over the suite is just a small part of the overall negotiation process, with the Mets’ willingness to provide additional perks reflecting their commitment to securing top free agents like Soto.
