Kyle Tucker landing spots: Ranking all 30 teams on best fit if Astros decide to trade All-Star outfielder

Seattle Mariners

These teams are either not in a position to contend in 2025 or have other areas of need that take precedence over adding an outfielder like Tucker. The Cardinals have a crowded outfield already, the Angels need pitching, the Twins have a surplus of outfielders, the Red Sox are focused on re-signing Carlos Correa, and the Mariners have young outfielders they’re committed to developing.

Possible fits, but not ideal

21. New York Mets
20. Toronto Blue Jays
19. Philadelphia Phillies
18. Atlanta Braves
17. San Francisco Giants

These teams could use Tucker and have the payroll flexibility to afford him, but they may have to give up significant talent in return. The Mets need to focus on pitching, the Blue Jays have a crowded outfield, the Phillies may prefer to spend on pitching, the Braves have a deep outfield already, and the Giants may prefer to add pitching depth.

Best fits

16. New York Yankees
15. Los Angeles Dodgers
14. Chicago Cubs
13. Milwaukee Brewers
12. Cincinnati Reds
11. Tampa Bay Rays
10. Cleveland Guardians
9. Texas Rangers
8. Arizona Diamondbacks
7. Kansas City Royals
6. Detroit Tigers
5. Baltimore Orioles
4. Pittsburgh Pirates
3. Washington Nationals
2. San Diego Padres
1. Los Angeles Angels

These teams have the need for an outfielder like Tucker, the payroll flexibility to afford him, and the talent to make a trade work. The Astros would likely get a significant return in a trade with any of these teams, and Tucker would have a chance to contribute to a contender in 2025.

The Milwaukee Brewers have an interesting situation with a crowded outfield and potentially adding Tucker would require some creative roster moves. The Pittsburgh Pirates and Washington Nationals could benefit from Tucker’s presence, with the Pirates needing offense and the Nationals looking to support their young core. Other bubble teams like the Tampa Bay Rays, Arizona Diamondbacks, Texas Rangers, Toronto Blue Jays, and Cincinnati Reds could also benefit from adding Tucker to boost their postseason chances. Contenders like the New York Mets, Chicago Cubs, Atlanta Braves, and Baltimore Orioles could also benefit from adding Tucker to their roster to improve their chances of making a postseason run. Best fits for Kyle Tucker

4. Cleveland Guardians

Cleveland has not had an outfielder hit 30 home runs since Grady Sizemore hit 33 in 2008. The last to do it before that was Juan Gonzalez (35 in 2001). Tucker hit 30 homers in 2021, 30 homers in 2022, 29 homers in 2023, and 23 homers in 78 games in 2024. There is more to life than home runs, I know, but wouldn’t it be nice to get some power from the outfield for once? The Guardians cleared significant cash in the Andrés Giménez trade and could clear more by trading Josh Naylor (a free agent after 2025 like Tucker) and his projected $13 million or so 2025 salary, and slotting Kyle Manzardo in at first base. José Ramírez is in his 30s now, Emmanuel Clase is still at the height of his powers, and Steven Kwan’s about to start making real money through arbitration. This is a pretty good time to splurge on a one-year rental like Tucker.

The Philadelphia Phillies have a pressing need for another outfielder to bolster their lineup. Adding someone like Tucker would be a significant upgrade and could potentially push Johan Rojas out of everyday duty. While Tucker is a lefty bat, which the Phillies already have in their lineup, his ability to hit both lefties and righties effectively could make him a valuable addition. The Astros may consider trading Tucker if they are unable to re-sign Alex Bregman, and the Phillies could explore a potential trade involving Alec Bohm.

The Los Angeles Dodgers, despite having a strong roster, still need another outfielder even after signing Michael Conforto. Tucker could be a better fit for them than Teoscar Hernández, as he is a more complete player and comes at a lower cost. The Yankees, on the other hand, missed out on re-signing Juan Soto and could see Tucker as a suitable alternative. Tucker’s combination of contact skills, power, speed, and defense make him an attractive option for the Yankees, who are reportedly among the teams pursuing him.

Interestingly, the best fit for Tucker may actually be his current team, the Houston Astros. With a thin outfield lineup, the Astros need to add outfielders rather than trade away their best one. While it’s always good to listen to offers, it’s hard to see how trading Tucker would benefit the Astros in the long run. General Manager Dana Brown may consider offers, but ultimately keeping Tucker seems essential for the team’s success in 2025.
