Scottie Scheffler will not be able to participate in the opening tournament of the PGA Tour’s 2025 season, The Sentry in Maui, as he sustained a puncture wound to his right hand from broken glass on Christmas Day. This unfortunate injury will keep him out of action for three to four weeks.

Scheffler’s agent, Blake Smith, shared this news in a statement released through the PGA Tour.

“While preparing dinner on Christmas Day, Scottie suffered a puncture wound to the palm of his right hand from broken glass,” the statement read. “Surgery was required to remove small glass fragments from his palm. He is expected to fully recover in three to four weeks but unfortunately, he will have to withdraw from The Sentry. His next event on the schedule is The American Express.”

The Sentry was set to take place from Jan. 2-5 at Maui’s Kapalua Resort. The American Express is scheduled for Jan. 16-19 in La Quinta, California, marking the first tournament of the season on the U.S. mainland.

Scheffler, the top-ranked player in the World Golf Ranking, was recently named the PGA Tour Player of the Year for the third consecutive time, a feat only matched by Tiger Woods from 2005-07. He held the No. 1 ranking throughout 2024, a feat last accomplished by Woods in 2009.

In 2024, Scheffler had an outstanding season, winning nine tournaments and seven PGA Tour titles, including prestigious events like the Masters and the Tour Championship. He also claimed a gold medal at the Paris Summer Olympics.

Despite facing challenges, such as his arrest before the PGA Championship in May, Scheffler continued to excel on the course. He focused on improving his putting throughout the year and even experimented with a new grip for better results. With his dedication to improvement, Scheffler remains a formidable competitor in the upcoming 2025 season, even with his current setback.
