Orioles’ quiet offseason marks a big step in the wrong direction

Baseball’s competitive window is limited, and teams must seize their moment when they have the chance to shine. The Baltimore Orioles had the opportunity to capitalize on their success over the past two seasons, but as the offseason progresses, they seem to be missing out on bolstering their roster.

For years, the Orioles followed a model of fielding competitive teams with star players until they hit free agency, then trading them for younger talent to keep payroll low. However, with a new ownership group promising investment and a talented roster, now is the time for the Orioles to make a push for success.

Despite stockpiling talent, the Orioles have been hesitant in free agency, missing out on key players that could elevate their team. Their lack of aggressiveness in pursuing top-tier starting pitching is particularly concerning, as this has been a glaring need for the team for some time.

Additionally, the Orioles have been reluctant to move prospects in their farm system to acquire established big leaguers, which could hinder their ability to compete at a high level. While they made a trade for left-hander Trevor Rogers, it did not yield the expected results.

As the Orioles aim to compete in a tough division, they must be proactive in improving their roster to keep up with teams like the Yankees and Red Sox, who have been aggressive in their offseason moves. Without significant additions, the Orioles risk falling behind their division rivals.

It is crucial for the Orioles to strike a balance between developing young talent, making strategic trades, and signing impactful free agents to build a winning roster. Failure to do so could result in watching their hard work fade away as other teams in the league surge ahead.
