Cain Velasquez Joins GFL as Team Manager
Former UFC heavyweight champion, Cain Velasquez, has made a surprising move to the GFL, taking on a management role within the promotion. This announcement comes amidst legal troubles for Velasquez, who is set to attend a sentencing hearing for attempted murder charges on Jan. 24.
In a statement released by GFL, it was revealed that Velasquez has appointed Javier Mendez, coach at American Kickboxing Academy, as the head coach of his team.
Velasquez recently pleaded no-contest to charges related to an incident in 2022 where he chased a car for 11 miles in pursuit of a man accused of molesting his son. The altercation resulted in gunfire, with the man’s stepfather sustaining non-life threatening injuries.
Following his arrest, Velasquez spent eight months in jail before being released on bail. Despite the legal challenges, he has now found a new role within GFL.
In addition to Velasquez, GFL has also welcomed other notable fighters like Paige VanZant, Cynthia Calvillo, Julia Budd, and Tonya Evinger to their roster. The date for GFL’s first event is yet to be announced.
