Yankees trade for Cubs OF Cody Bellinger as former MVP’s career takes another turn

The New York Yankees have found their replacement for Juan Soto in Cody Bellinger, who they acquired in a trade with the Chicago Cubs. The deal, announced on Tuesday, includes the Cubs sending $5 million to the Yankees and receiving right-handed reliever Cody Poteet in return. Bellinger, a former NL MVP, will play center field for the Yankees, with Aaron Judge moving to right field.

Bellinger’s career has been tumultuous since his MVP season in 2019. After dislocating his shoulder in 2020, he struggled with injuries and performance issues in the following seasons. However, he had a comeback year in 2023 with the Cubs, winning NL Comeback Player of the Year. Despite a disappointing 2024 season, Bellinger secured a three-year, $80 million deal with the Cubs before being traded to the Yankees.

The trade provides the Yankees with a much-needed offensive boost following Juan Soto’s departure to the Mets. It also addresses the Cubs’ desire to offload Bellinger’s salary and potentially make additional roster improvements. The move signifies a new chapter for Bellinger as he looks to rediscover his MVP form with his new team.

In conclusion, the trade between the Yankees and Cubs has implications for both teams as they aim to strengthen their rosters and compete in the upcoming season. The deal marks a fresh start for Bellinger and a strategic move for both clubs as they navigate the challenges of the MLB landscape.
