Aleksandre Topuria is unfazed by the added storyline surrounding his octagon debut, remaining focused on his upcoming fight.
Topuria, brother of UFC featherweight champion Ilia Topuria, is set to face Colby Thicknesse at UFC 312 in Sydney this weekend. Despite Thicknesse having former champion Alexander Volkanovski in his corner, Topuria is not letting that affect him.
“There’s no rivalry — there’s Aleksandre Topuria and Colby inside the cage,” Topuria told MMA Fighting. “I’ve been there, we won that battle. We had, one time, that battle, Pressure going to be on him. There is no pressure to me and if Alexander Volkanovski [is] going to be there, happy for him. Very good. See you there.
Topuria emphasizes that his focus is solely on his opponent and not on outside distractions. He is determined to give his best performance in the octagon.
“El Conquistador” is returning to competition after a two-year hiatus. He acknowledges that his brother’s success expedited his journey to the UFC, but he is ready to face any challenges that come his way.
Topuria explains that he put his fighting career on hold to support his brother in his title fights, and now it’s his turn to shine in the octagon with his brother by his side.
Having his brother in his corner provides Topuria with the strength and motivation he needs to succeed. He values his brother’s guidance and believes in their bond.
“It’s like when I go inside the cage, I know that I have another Aleksandre outside the cage, which is Ilia Topuria.”
This weekend’s fight will mark Topuria’s UFC debut, facing off against the undefeated Thicknesse who steps in as a late replacement. Topuria is ready to showcase his skills and make a statement in his first UFC appearance.
Despite the extra attention leading up to the fight, Topuria remains focused and determined to come out victorious. He is confident in his abilities and is prepared to give his all in the octagon.
“I will not let him win this fight. I’m ready to die, but mostly I’m ready to kill. So this is what I feel, truly.”
