With first baseman Triston Casas out for the season due to injury and designated hitter Rafael Devers hesitant about playing first base, the Boston Red Sox are working to solidify their infield.
Romy González and Abraham Toro have been filling in at first base since Casas’ injury, but González was placed on the 10-day injured list on Saturday with a left quad contusion. To replace him on the roster, Nick Sogard was called up from Triple-A Worcester and will start at first base against the Kansas City Royals.
González sustained the injury during a game against the Texas Rangers when he collided with their first baseman. Despite initially appearing fine, he was unable to continue and Toro took over at first base.
Although González and manager Alex Cora initially hoped he could avoid the injured list, his recovery did not progress as expected, leading to the roster move.
In his 17 games this season, González has a batting average of .308 with six doubles, six RBI, and three stolen bases. Toro, on the other hand, has struggled with a .143 average and a .286 OPS in five games.
Sogard, who has been called up to replace González, has a .188 batting average with six doubles, 10 RBI, and six steals in Triple-A. However, he showed promise in his 31 games with Boston last season.
González is expected to return after his stint on the injured list, unless the Red Sox decide to bring in another first baseman or convince Devers to reconsider playing the position.
