The Los Angeles Angels are making waves this offseason with their latest acquisition. According to a report by Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Angels have signed veteran left-handed pitcher Yusei Kikuchi to a three-year, $63 million deal.
Kikuchi, 33, had a standout performance in the second half of the 2024 MLB season with the Houston Astros. In 10 starts, he averaged six innings per start, allowing just 18 earned runs, eight home runs, and 14 walks. He also struck out 76 batters and finished the season with an impressive 2.70 ERA in Houston.
Having started his professional career in Japan in 2010, Kikuchi brings a wealth of experience to the Angels. He previously played nine seasons for the Seibu Lions before signing with the Seattle Mariners and later the Toronto Blue Jays.
The move to Houston seems to have rejuvenated Kikuchi’s career, with the Astros helping him improve his pitching location and leading to a significant increase in strikeouts. This newfound success bodes well for his future in the MLB.
The Angels have been active in the offseason, making key acquisitions like designated hitter and outfielder Jorge Soler and catcher Travis d’Arnaud. The addition of Kikuchi further strengthens their roster and solidifies their position as contenders in the upcoming season.
