Anthony Smith is set to make his final appearance as a professional athlete at UFC on ESPN 66 as he transitions into the next phase of his life.

Longtime MMA veteran and former UFC light heavyweight title contender Smith (37-21 MMA, 13-11 UFC) will have his retirement fight on Saturday (ESPN2, ESPN+) against Zhang Mingyang (18-6 MMA, 2-0 UFC) in the co-main event at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Mo.

Less than two years ago, Smith expressed fear about retiring, but everything changed after the tragic passing of his lifelong friend and coach, Scott Morton.

“I’ve come to terms with it,” Smith told MMA Junkie. “Scottie’s death altered my perspective. It’s a different experience now without him, and it feels like a new chapter.”

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to have a proper farewell in a way I desire. This will mark the end of many things for me as an athlete,” Smith added.

Smith, 36, is focused on his bout with Mingyang but looks forward to the relief of ending this chapter in his life after the fight.

“I can’t wait to be more present in my kids’ lives and not have the constant pressure of the next fight looming over me,” Smith said.

As Smith prepares for his final fight, he aims to savor every moment of the process and fully immerse himself in the experience.

“I’ll miss the intensity of fighting – the sounds, the smells, the adrenaline rush. It’s a unique experience that I’ve always cherished,” Smith reflected.

Smith understands the rarity of a positive ending in MMA and is prepared to face the challenge Mingyang presents, aiming to showcase his years of training and experience in his final performance.

“I want to trust my instincts and not overthink. I’ve focused on being reactive and instinctual in this fight, avoiding the urge to analyze too much,” Smith explained.
