Liverpool boss Arne Slot stands by Trent Alexander-Arnold amid defensive struggles
Despite recent defensive lapses, Liverpool manager Arne Slot refuses to point fingers at Trent Alexander-Arnold for the team’s goals conceded. The talented right-back has faced criticism for his defensive abilities throughout his career, with his performance in the 2-2 draw against Manchester United coming under scrutiny. This match marked Alexander-Arnold’s return following Real Madrid’s bid to sign him.
Slot has been vocal in his support for Alexander-Arnold, emphasizing that the team’s defensive struggles are not solely his responsibility. While Liverpool started the season conceding just five goals in 12 matches, they have since let in 20 goals in the next 17 games, averaging 1.2 goals per game.
Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s FA Cup match against Accrington Stanley, Slot stated, “I do see a certain pattern in the goals we concede but I don’t see the pattern if it is about Trent. Not at all.”
Slot highlighted Alexander-Arnold’s overall strong performances this season, stating, “Trent has had one difficult game for us and maybe a few that were OK to good. Mainly, he has had great games when he played for us this season.”
He also commended Alexander-Arnold’s impact off the bench in the Carabao Cup match against Tottenham, where he scored a stunning goal that was cleared off the line.
Liverpool has rejected Real Madrid’s offers for Alexander-Arnold and looks set to keep him until the end of the season, when his contract expires.
