Arne Slot has called on Liverpool fans to continue showing their support for Trent Alexander-Arnold amid ongoing speculation linking him with a move to Real Madrid.
With Alexander-Arnold’s contract set to expire in six months, Real Madrid’s interest in the right-back has caused a stir, with reports suggesting they are preparing a second bid for the player, who they hope to sign on a free transfer in the summer.
Slot has reassured that Alexander-Arnold is fully committed to Liverpool, but the contract negotiations have divided opinion among fans, with club legend Jamie Carragher accusing the player’s representatives of instigating the approach from Madrid.
In an attempt to maintain unity, Slot stated in a press conference: “Our fans have always been supportive and I trust that they will react appropriately. The bond between the team and the supporters is what makes this club special.”
“I believe that the fans and the team have a strong connection, and they know how to handle situations like this without my guidance.”
In addition to Alexander-Arnold, Liverpool is also working to secure the future of Virgil van Dijk, while Mohamed Salah’s public comments about his contract situation have added to the tension at the club.
Despite the off-field distractions, Slot believes that the contract negotiations could actually benefit the team on the field.
“It might even be advantageous,” Slot said. “It keeps the players grounded and focused on improving every week. We don’t discuss these matters internally, as it is part of the business.”
“These situations are common in football, especially in January. It doesn’t distract me or the players, and we continue to focus on our performances.”
