Arsenal is currently in the process of shortlisting candidates for the club’s new sporting director. The final decision is expected to be made in March, as reported.
The sudden resignation of Edu Gaspar in November left the Gunners in a state of shock. The former midfielder had been overseeing the club’s transfer activities since his return in 2019, before leaving to join a multi-club ownership group centered around Nottingham Forest.
Jason Ayto, who had been Edu’s assistant, is currently serving as the interim sporting director. He is being considered as a potential permanent replacement, according to The Athletic.
Other candidates on the shortlist include Dan Ashworth, Roberto Olabe, Thiago Scuro, and Andrea Berta. Ashworth, who has previously worked at Newcastle and Manchester United, is one of the contenders for the role.
Interestingly, despite being previously named as a potential candidate by Sky Sports, PSG advisor Luis Campos is reportedly “not in the frame” for the role.
Ayto’s performance during the recent January transfer window, while acting as the interim sporting director, did not meet expectations. Arsenal’s lack of spending and failed bids for players highlighted the need for a permanent appointment in the role.
Injuries to key players have further emphasized the need for reinforcement in the squad. The new sporting director will have the immediate task of addressing the team’s striker shortage.
The upcoming appointment will be crucial for Arsenal as they look to strengthen their squad and make strategic decisions for the future.
