Arsenal have completed the signing of USWNT defender Jenna Nighswonger from NWSL team NJ/NY Gotham on a permanent deal.
The Gunners had been in talks with the player and reached an agreement with Gotham earlier this week. Nighswonger’s contract was set to expire at the end of the 2025 NWSL season, giving her the option to explore free agency in November.
Having spent the last two seasons with Gotham, Nighswonger was named the 2023 NWSL Rookie of the Year in her debut season. However, she struggled for playing time towards the end of the 2024 season under coach Juan Carlos Amoros.
The defender confirmed her departure from Gotham via social media, expressing her gratitude to the club and fans.
Nighswonger was part of the U.S Women’s National Team that won gold at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, showcasing her talent on the international stage.
Known for her versatility, Nighswonger primarily plays as a left-back but can also slot in at center-back and midfield. Her addition will provide Arsenal with defensive depth and tactical flexibility.
The 24-year-old is Arsenal’s sole signing in the January transfer window, following several departures from the club’s academy and first team.
In her statement, Nighswonger expressed her excitement about joining Arsenal and her desire to contribute to the team’s success.
Director of Women’s Football Clare Wheatley welcomed Nighswonger to the club and highlighted her potential to make a significant impact.
