Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta downplayed concerns over Kai Havertz’s injury after the striker had to leave the field with a facial cut during the team’s defeat against Inter Milan on Wednesday.
Havertz was in action for Arsenal in the Champions League match at San Siro, where they suffered a 1-0 loss after a controversial penalty decision. Despite dominating possession and registering 20 shots, Arsenal failed to find the back of the net against Inter’s Yann Sommer.
In the closing stages of the game, Havertz collided with Yann Aurel Bisseck and sustained a cut to his face, leading to him being substituted. Arteta provided an update on Havertz’s condition, stating, “Kai has a significant cut and required stitches. We are hopeful he will be fit for the upcoming weekend.”
In addition to Havertz, Mikel Merino was also forced off due to injury. The Spanish midfielder did not return for the second half after sustaining a head injury.
Merino was involved in two penalty incidents during the match. He was first penalized for a handball in Arsenal’s penalty area before being denied a penalty after Sommer punched him following a missed cross.
Arteta clarified that Merino was not concussed but was feeling unwell, prompting his substitution to ensure his well-being.
Despite the setbacks, Arsenal welcomed back captain Martin Odegaard from injury. The influential playmaker made a cameo appearance after being sidelined for two months with an ankle sprain.
Arteta’s team will need to regroup for an upcoming Premier League clash against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
