Aryna Sabalenka has unfortunately had to withdraw from Wimbledon 2024 due to a shoulder injury. The two-time Australian Open champion and No. 3 seed was set to face Emina Bektas in the first round. Sabalenka has been struggling with shoulder pain since pulling out of the Berlin Ladies Open quarterfinals a week ago.
In an emotional Instagram post, Sabalenka expressed her disappointment, stating, “Heartbroken to have to tell you all that I won’t be able to play The Championships this year. I tried everything to get myself ready but unfortunately my shoulder is not cooperating.”
Despite pushing herself in practice, Sabalenka’s team advised her against playing to prevent further damage. She vowed to come back stronger next year, as Wimbledon holds a special place in her heart.
Sabalenka, who has reached the semifinals in her last two Wimbledon appearances, described the injury as frustrating, especially affecting her serving ability. Despite undergoing MRI scans, rehab, and treatments, she has been unable to overcome the issue.
In her absence, Russia’s Erika Andreeva will take her place after narrowly missing out in the final round of qualifying. Sabalenka’s fans will undoubtedly miss her presence on the court, but they can look forward to her return in the future.
