Atlanta United secured a thrilling victory against Toronto FC thanks to Jamal Thiaré’s unexpected heroics.
In stoppage time, Thiaré scored a remarkable goal to break the tie and secure a 2-1 win for his team. The replay revealed the clever play that led to the decisive moment.
Thiaré managed to sneak behind the goal and playfully drink from Toronto goalkeeper Luka Gavran’s water bottle while the game was in progress. Taking advantage of Gavran’s distraction, the Senegalese striker seized the opportunity to steal the ball from the unsuspecting goalkeeper and score the winning goal.
Surprisingly, none of the Toronto players noticed Thiaré’s sneaky move or alerted Gavran to the imminent danger.
After the game, Atlanta interim head coach Rob Valentino jokingly remarked, “Exactly how we wanted it. I would say I’m on the younger side of coaching and on the younger side of being in the game, but I have never seen anything like that.”
Thiaré, who joined Atlanta United in his first season after a successful stint with French club Le Havre, proved to be a game-changer with his audacious move.
The victory was a much-needed boost for Atlanta, which is currently facing a challenging season and sits ninth in the Eastern Conference with a 6-6-8 record. The team’s win puts them two points behind Nashville SC for a spot in the first round of the MLS Cup playoffs.
