January’s arrival signals the start of ranking minor-league prospects. Each MLB team is offering hope to their fans, either through active offseason moves or promising prospects for the future.
CBS Sports will be evaluating the top three prospects in every organization over the next month. Our definition of a “prospect” is based on rookie eligibility for the 2025 season. These rankings are the result of discussions with scouts, analysts, and other experts in the industry.
Remember, these rankings are subjective and do not predict the future. If you’re interested, we’ve also published our list of the top 25 prospects in all of the minors.
Now, let’s dive into the top three prospects in the Baltimore Orioles system.
1. Samuel Basallo, C/1B
Top 25 ranking: No. 8
Overview: Basallo is a powerful left-handed hitter with some uncertainties about his position. Despite concerns about his defense behind the plate, his offensive potential is too great to ignore. His MLB debut is expected in late summer 2025.
2. Jordan Mayo, 3B
Top 25 ranking: No. 24
Overview: Mayo is a corner infielder known for his power and plate discipline. While he may need to adjust to the big leagues, his offensive skills make him a promising prospect for the Orioles.
3. Heston Kjerstad, OF
Overview: Kjerstad, a former No. 2 overall pick, has dealt with health issues early in his career. Despite his strikeout tendencies, he possesses above-average power and could secure a regular role in the Orioles’ lineup this season.
