Barcelona defender Inigo Martinez has expressed his support for Nico Williams to continue his development at Athletic Club.
Williams, a target for Barcelona this summer, chose to stay at Athletic Club despite interest from other clubs like Arsenal and Chelsea.
During a recent match between the two teams, Barcelona fans showed their disappointment by booing Williams throughout the game.
Former Athletic defender Martinez tried to ease tensions by stating that Williams will excel wherever he plays.
“Nico will continue to grow, whether at another team or at Athletic. The decision will be his, and I will support him regardless,” Martinez said.
Following Barcelona’s win, Williams was seen speaking with Barcelona manager Hansi Flick, who praised the young player for his performance at the Euros and preferred not to discuss rival teams.
Barcelona’s pursuit of Williams seems to have waned, as they are still facing challenges in registering new signing Dani Olmo due to salary constraints.
Despite selling and loaning out players, Barcelona is yet to free up enough salary space to finalize their squad for the season.
