Javier Mendez expresses his disagreement with Belal Muhammad’s approach in his recent UFC 315 title loss but acknowledges the reasoning behind it.
In the main event at Bell Centre in Montreal, Muhammad (24-4 MMA, 15-4 UFC) chose to focus on striking, leading to a unanimous decision loss to Jack Della Maddalena (18-2 MMA, 8-0 UFC). This decision resulted in Muhammad sustaining a broken nose, orbital bone, and split lip.
Mendez reflects on former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov’s desire to showcase his striking abilities and move away from just being known as an elite grappler. While Nurmagomedov was successful in standing and trading with Al Iaquinta at UFC 223, Muhammad faced consequences in his fight against Della Maddalena.
“It seemed like Belal wanted to prove himself in a way that none of us thought was possible,” Mendez shared with Submission Radio. “He chose to stand instead of utilizing the skills that earned him the title. I used to push Khabib to focus on his strengths rather than trying to prove critics wrong about his striking abilities.”
“Many fighters fall into the trap of wanting to showcase skills that are not their forte,” Mendez continued. “They aim to prove doubters wrong rather than sticking to what makes them successful.”
Mendez also commended Della Maddalena for his ability to control the fight on the feet.
“Jack did a fantastic job in preventing Muhammad from implementing his game plan,” Mendez noted. “He effectively mixed up his strikes, maintained distance, and controlled the center of the octagon. He truly showcased his skills as a well-rounded fighter.”
