The winners of the 2024 MLB Gold Glove awards were announced by Major League Baseball on Sunday. The awards recognize the top defensive players at each position in both the American League and National League, as well as one utility player from each league.
Several teams had multiple players honored, including the Kansas City Royals, Cleveland Guardians, Seattle Mariners, Colorado Rockies, Milwaukee Brewers, and San Francisco Giants.
Selections for the Gold Glove winners were made through a combination of votes from managers and coaches (75%) along with the SABR Defensive Index (25%). Managers and coaches were not allowed to vote for players on their own teams. The utility players were chosen using a specialized SABR formula.
The Gold Glove awards have a rich history, dating back to 1957 when the first group of winners was selected from all of MLB. The awards were later expanded to honor players from each league starting in 1958. In 2022, a utility Gold Glove was introduced.
Of the 20 players who received Gold Gloves this year, 14 of them were first-time winners. This ties the record set in 2022 for the most first-time winners since the inception of the award.
