The Atlanta Braves secured a crucial victory on Thursday night, with their standout closer playing a pivotal role in the game.
In a tense matchup against the Philadelphia Phillies, the Braves emerged victorious with a 3-2 win in the series decider. Rising rookie pitcher Spencer Schwellenbach claimed the win, while Raisel Iglesias notched his 28th save of the season.
Iglesias delivered an outstanding performance, striking out key hitters Bryce Harper, Nick Castellanos, and Bryson Stott in succession to seal the series win. This victory helped the Braves maintain a 1 1/2 game lead over the New York Mets in the Wild Card race and stay six games behind the Phillies in the division.
Mark Bowman, a Braves reporter for MLB.com, highlighted Iglesias’ exceptional form by noting that he has now pitched 10 consecutive outings without allowing a baserunner, spanning 11 innings. This achievement puts Iglesias in elite company, with only two other relief pitchers in AL/NL history achieving a similar feat.
Bowman also pointed out that Iglesias’ streak of retiring 35 consecutive batters is a franchise record for the Braves dating back to the Expansion Era, showcasing the pitcher’s dominance on the mound.
Since joining the Braves in 2022, Iglesias has enjoyed a standout season, converting 28 of 30 save opportunities with an impressive 1.45 ERA and holding opposing batters to a minuscule .137 batting average.
Despite facing numerous injuries throughout the season, the Braves remain competitive in the playoff race, with Iglesias emerging as a formidable weapon in their bullpen. His reliability in closing out games has been instrumental in the team’s success.
