Tiger Woods’ major season has concluded with yet another disappointing performance resulting in a missed cut at the British Open. Teeing off in the morning at Royal Troon, Woods struggled, shooting a 6-over on the day to finish at 14-over, far from the cut line. His round included five bogeys, a double bogey, and only one birdie.
Despite a slim chance of making the cut following his 8-over 79 on Thursday, Woods began his second round with a double bogey on the second hole, setting the tone for a challenging day. The highlight of his round was a birdie on the sixth hole, but overall, Friday proved to be a difficult afternoon for Woods and his supporters.
Woods’ performance has been under intense scrutiny, with social media accounts even commending his ability to escape from the rough:
Though there were some positive moments, such as the applause he received while walking up the 18th green:
This week adds to a series of disappointing showings for Woods in major tournaments. Following a 60th-place finish at the Masters, he has failed to make the cut at the subsequent three majors. Woods has not completed a major tournament outside of Augusta since 2020. As he has expressed his focus on majors going forward, it is uncertain if we will see Tiger Woods compete again in 2024. Whether he chooses to retire or not, improvement in his game is essential for future success in tournament play.
“Hopefully next year,” Woods remarked on Thursday, “will be a little bit better than this year.”
