Cardinals listed as surprise trade deadline winners; where do they rank?

The recent Major League Baseball trade deadline has passed, signaling the start of a fast-paced race towards the playoffs.

With the National League Wild Card race heating up, the St. Louis Cardinals knew they needed to strengthen their roster. They made moves to acquire a starting pitcher, an outfielder, and a reliever.

In a complex three-team trade, the Cardinals brought in Erick Fedde and Tommy Pham from the Chicago White Sox, while sending Tommy Edman and a prospect to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Additionally, they acquired reliever Shawn Armstrong from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for Dylan Carlson.

While Fedde, Pham, and Armstrong may not be household names, they bring valuable skills to the Cardinals. MLB.com’s Will Leitch recognized the Cardinals as the top “trade deadline winners” due to the strategic acquisitions.

Fedde, a standout pitcher in the Korean Baseball Organization, has returned to the U.S. with impressive stats, including a 3.11 ERA and 4.8 wins above replacement in 22 starts. With a contract through 2025 at a reasonable price, Fedde adds depth to the Cardinals’ rotation.

Pham, a seasoned veteran, rejoins the Cardinals as a rental player with playoff experience. Armstrong, known for his consistency, brings his talents to the Cardinals’ bullpen.

While Leitch praised the Cardinals for their savvy trades, he noted that making the playoffs is far from guaranteed. With a record of 55-52, the Cardinals are two games behind the final NL Wild Card spot and must continue to perform at a high level.

As the season progresses, the Cardinals will rely on their new acquisitions to contribute to their postseason push.
