During a recent episode of his “7PM in Brooklyn” podcast, Carmelo Anthony revealed that he nearly re-joined the New York Knicks in the summer of 2022. However, discussions broke down when the Knicks made it clear that Anthony would have a limited role as the 15th man on the roster.
Anthony expressed his reluctance to accept such a diminished position, stating, “I can’t accept that. The not knowing of when you’re going to play and not play, I’d rather not go through that. I’m gonna bow out gracefully.”
Despite the Knicks ultimately signing Taj Gibson instead of Anthony, it seems that it was for the best. The team had a successful season, making it to the second round of the playoffs with standout performances from players like Jalen Brunson and Julius Randle.
Although a deal couldn’t be reached, Anthony remains connected to the Knicks organization and continues to support the team, even attending games and showing his alumni pride.
Ultimately, Anthony officially announced his retirement in the spring of 2023, closing the chapter on a storied NBA career.
