This year’s Baseball Writers Association of America’s 2025 Hall of Fame voting outcomes will be announced on Jan. 21. However, CC Sabathia isn’t waiting for the results to talk about his hat preference if he gets inducted into the Hall of Fame. The 2007 Cy Young Award winner expressed his desire for a New York Yankees cap on his plaque during a recent charity event, as reported by the New York Daily News.
It’s important to note that players don’t have the final say in selecting the cap for their Hall of Fame plaque. Nevertheless, Sabathia stands a good chance of having his wish granted if he is voted in. With 11 seasons with the Yankees compared to 7.5 seasons with the Cleveland Guardians and half a season with the Milwaukee Brewers, Sabathia’s tenure and statistics favor the Yankees cap. Despite winning his Cy Young Award with another team, this is unlikely to sway the decision.
At 44 years old, Sabathia is a first-time Hall of Fame ballot nominee. Throughout his 19-year career, he achieved a 116 ERA+ and over 60 Wins Above Replacement, along with six All-Star Game appearances and a World Series win in 2009. Matt Snyder, a first-time Hall of Fame voter, recently explained why he views Sabathia as a Hall of Famer:
Sabathia had an impressive combination of peak performance and longevity, accumulating significant career stats. Additionally, with the evolving role of starting pitchers, there should be recognition for pitchers who not only pitched many innings but excelled in doing so.
“I’m thrilled,” Sabathia remarked on the possibility of being inducted into the Hall of Fame. “It’s something I never imagined during my playing days, but to be considered for the Hall of Fame is exhilarating. Let’s wait and see what happens.”
