The New York Yankees are set to welcome right-hander Clarke Schmidt back to their rotation on Wednesday night as he makes his season debut against the Kansas City Royals. Schmidt had been sidelined at the beginning of the season due to right rotator cuff tendinitis.
“I feel good,” Schmidt shared with the New York Daily News. “I feel like my last two rehab starts have been productive down there in Somerset. Happy with the results and the stuff and the command and everything that goes with it.”
The Yankees have made room for Schmidt by sending right-hander Allan Winans to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Schmidt, 29, is entering his third full season as a starter. In his first two seasons, he posted a 4.02 ERA and a 3.18 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 49 games.
Schmidt’s return will provide a much-needed boost to the Yankees’ rotation, which has been dealing with injuries to key pitchers like Gerrit Cole, Luis Gil, Marcus Stroman, and JT Brubaker. With only two quality starts in their first 17 games, the Yankees are currently ranked 28th in rotation ERA.
Looking ahead, the Yankees will likely focus on improving their pitching staff throughout the summer to remain competitive in the American League East. Schmidt’s return is a step in the right direction, and the team will be looking to extract more from their other pitchers as well.
